I desire two main lines using fast track 072 & 054 curves? I have a Lionel K4 now and want to purchase additional steam not much larger then the K4. I would like switching between the mains and some sidings. I guess I will need a hatch for access? I am new to o gauge and open for any suggestions. I started purchasing items now, I plan to start benchwork mid September.

Bob,

Do you have any track planning software?  It can be helpful when looking at other people's plans.  I use RR-Track.

I have a 6x12 FasTrack layout that is based on one in "The FasTrack Book" that was originally designed to fit on a 5x9 ping-pong table.  The one in the book is O-36 but I am in the process of modifying it so that the main line is a minimum of O72.  What I like about it is that it is a folded dogbone with one of the return loops above the other.  To me this makes for a more interesting run.  I'll post a track plan and a picture later today.  Hopefully, that will give you a better idea of what I mean.

In general though, I think with a 7x12 space you have an opportunity to get away from simple loops on plywood and add a little "roll" to the terrain.  That might make for more interesting scenery.

I don't know what your space is like but having a spot near the edge where you can connect a temporary expansion yard or module is very handy.

Another suggestion I have is to go big when it comes to curves.  I didn't take bigger engines into account when I built my layout and now I am having to rebuild to accommodate the larger curves.

Thank you both for your help. The track layout from prr bruce is great. I would love a manifest if possible.

I also like the idea from gandalf97 with the rolling hills I want to try landscaping as western Pa i plan backdrop mountain scenery.

I will make a hatch as suggested.

I appreciate the feedback and help.

Check out my track plan on my layout. It is 13.5x8 but I am sure you could make adjustments too your size you need. It has a hill along the back to add some interesting scenery and it isn't just as simple loop.

Very nice layout with the hills. I enjoyed the photos they are very helpful to see how you make the risers for the track.

Thank you for sharing.

Bob, I will put together a track manifest and diagram showing where each piece goes. It's a bit busy for me at work this week, and I have a gig with my band this weekend. Will send you those when I have a chance.

Thanks, and look forward to seeing some photos as you progress.

Bruce

P.S. Plus I'm putting my bike on the road this weekend after an engine re-build, when it rains, it pours!
