Seeking advice on the best approach to bring back this locomotive to running condition after it has sat unused for about 40 years.  Condition appears very good.  I surmise oiling all the running gear, side rods, etc.  Removing the gearbox cover and cleaning out the old grease and replacing it with new grease.  Assessing that all moving parts run smoothly before applying power.

Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

D. All the above you’ve mentioned,….and while you’re at it, remove the gear box off the worm wheel, ( you’re already there) and now you can manually roll the chassis slowly, observing for any binding, pinching, or locking up that might can become problematic when attempting to run the locomotive. KTM’s, Us Hobbies, etc. can be quite finicky to get rolling nice and smoothly,……patience, and watchful observation is the key,….

I have a bunch of USH KTM locos, and have never had a bind in one.     All mine have been smooth out of th e box, and a few of them were brand new.     That said, it is a good idea to check.

As you mentioned, a little lube, and it should be fine.

I have found that the motors in the MG KTM locos were a little slow for my taste.    The ones in the later KTM USH locos run a little faster and I like them just fine.    They run well and do not need to be replaced in my opinion.
