I recently picked up a RY 44 ton. All my road crossings are even with top of rails and my other locos have no problem. The 44 ton stalls on every crossing because the gearboxes sit so low. Any fix for this other than ripping out all my crossings?

How far below railhead do the drives hang?
I wouldn't think the gearboxes sit lower than the rail head or how could the loco roll through a switch?
Your crossing surface between the rails maybe slightly higher than the rail head.
I had a crossing I thought was even with the rail head but was slightly higher on the outside rail and a loco with a wide tire tread would hit the road surface and leave the rail just enough to lose contact.
Perhaps the flanges or flange ways are to tight allowing the wheels to ride up and lose contact.

I placed mine on a piece of track and discovered it was the screws on the gearbox cover plates that were making contact. I’m looking for some flathead screws to replace the others.

I may have an earlier version. Mine is the one with the full cover plate and the screws are what bottom out on the crossings as they are below rail height. I am about take one of the trucks apart and see if there is a fix.
A larger wheel set? (if the screws aren't enough)
Can it run without the covers?; or will axles drop out? (gear/chain still may hit too...?)
Suggest countersinking the holes in the cover plates and using flat head screws. NWSL should have the screws you need. If not, go to Amazon (don't laugh!).
Thank you for the suggestions. I took the covers off and it ran great. I may leave them off but either way it works now. I disassembled it tonight for painting too.
Interesting picture. Three rail models had none of the pictured plates and covers.
Interesting as I have both the 70 ton and 25 ton locos. Now I haven't looked for a while buy at least one's gears are exposed.
