What do community members think of various different approaches to the control of fan-operated smoke units?  I have one locomotive (MTH smoke unit) driven by GRJ's Super Chuffer, several (Lionel smoke units) with the TAS Puff-N-Chuff, and one with the 3rd Rail smoke unit.  Plus Lionel engines of various vintages with original factory smoke control.  To my eye, the Super Chuffer gives the most realistic puffs (plus other benefits), but at a price.

MTH has always been known for building great smoke units, and they perform well. Lionel has also really stepped up its game in the last 10 years. These recent Lionel Legacy smoke units can put out a good volume of smoke and do an excellent job of realistic and synchronized chuffs. If you have an older smoke unit, the super chauffer is a worthwhile upgrade to breathe new life into the old engine and compete with the new stuff.
