Ross turnout length

Coming off a curve into the points of a switch increases the chance of derailments. Cutting off the short straight part before the points increases it even more.

Dennis is right on the money. If you're going to cut down a turnout, cut it down from the parts past the frog.

According to your photo above, you only want to cut a couple ties off from the "points" end of the switch. Just leave that end alone, and cut off more from the "trailing point end" .... it won't matter if you cut off some of the curved portion of the turnout as well.
