I could not find a scale sized dockside switcher on the Lionel web page.  Have they ever made one?  Looks like the traditional O docksider is 8.5".  Obviously a scale version would be slightly larger, but would it be large enough to accommodate whatever board(s) Legacy operation requires?  Just curious if a Legacy docksider is even a possibility.

I managed to stick TMCC into this one, but I couldn't find room for the sound.  It would be interesting if Lionel takes a similar sized unit and gets Legacy with sound into it!

I also installed TMCC into this one.  If I could find one of the Sound Commander boards, I could probably get sound, but the two board ERR sound doesn't fit.

At one time, Electric Railroad made a special TMCC board for the docksider 0-6-0 in the second picture. I do not know if there are any left, but you could always ask.

The new version of command electronics is smaller than the old, so there may be more options now that just a year ago.

Nothing that I see.  All that ERR has currently is the RS Commander, and that's a two board set that's way too big.  My Copper Range actually has one of the Digital Dynamics TMCC boards in it, it was the right dimensions to fit.  I have a space in the back that might fit an ERR Sound Commander single board, but those are really scarce now, and they're out of production.

1.95" L  x  1.25" W  x  0.95" H is far too large for either of these locomotives.

I'm tempted to try to build a board based on the PIC processor to interface with the RailSounds data bus and at least add a whistle and bell.  However, I'd have to be sure that I wouldn't step on any patents to sell a few and recover the cost of producing it.

Of course, there's always the trailing boxcar trick with the sound components, but I'm not ready to admit defeat yet.   Both of these still have a speaker for the original horn that was used for conventional operation, so I just need the board.

I did find a Sound Commander some time back and put it into a Thomas The Tank Engine TMCC conversion.

The Lionel 0-6-0 is indeed 1:48 scale, and is also based upon the pictured L&CV prototype.

It is actually a very nice model, at a good price and adequately detailed.

It cries out for ERR Command, but was designed with "non-electrocoupler" coupler

mounts, which is a problem that could be overcome, but adds a complication

with which I no longer want to deal.

Actually, I would prefer that Lionel produce its (can-motor, PW-based) "PRR"

0-4-0 (not the K-line version) with slope back tender equipped with ERR.

That loco is well-made and always had a realistic look about it that most of the PW steamers lacked. The can-motor version runs well and mine (20 years old) has an apparently bullet-proof smoke unit.

The trailing car is no doubt the best solution for sound. It would allow a decent size speaker and space for full Railsounds plus if the car had pickup rollers it could help with contact issues with switches, crossovers, etc. You could no doubt get a Sound Commander to fit along with the cheap speaker that comes with the engine but the sound would be greatly compromised.

The Lionel docksiders are some of my favorite locomotives to run.  They operate nicely and can pull quite a bit.  They are just fun to run and have good detail.  It would be neat to have the Legacy sound and chuff, but they would probably end up priced too high.

I own four of these docksiders...Lionel Lines, Santa Fe, C&O, and North Pole Central.

The C&O fired the bug-eyed engineer and fireman and hired replacements from Woodland Scenics...

ERR boards for the Docksider required surgery to the boiler casting to install.  It was still easy to make contact with the edge of the PC board and these were discontinued.

If you are concerned about a particular piece of equipment being "scale" get our a scale ruler and compare the model's measurements to its prototype measurements.  Manufacturers product labeling isn't always correct/accurate.
