I know Scalecoat I paint states not plastic compatible and Scalecoat II states plastic compatible.  Does anyone actually know the difference and what Scalecoat I does to plastic?

I did an experiment on a junk plastic boxcar by spraying Scalecoat I on it and found no issues except it seemed to take longer to dry.  The boxcar is a K Line and had paint on it already maybe that's why I there was no reaction.  If that is the case maybe its time for two more experiments, one on natural plastic and one on primered plastic.

Anyone ever used Scalecoat I on plastic for a final finish?

With the demise of Scalecoat would be nice to be able to use paints already on had for multiple materials.

I don't know what the different make up between the two types of paint are.    However, I have had the same experience.    I have used Scalecoat I on plastic with not problems.     I don't think I have noticed a problem on any plastic applications, but I have not done that many.

I guess the issue is that that the solvent carrier in scalecoat I could craze or warp certain types of plastic.   I think styrene for example is very susceptible to solvent damage.

I have noticed that Scalecoat II seems to be a thinner coating than scalecoat I.    This had two effects on my projects.   First it allowed the details on the project to show through better.    But second, it usually required 2 or more coats.

Scalecoat on an unpainted plastic surface will craze on some and not on others , guessing there are many different plastics out there. I always tested a bit on an area that would not be seen. I liked the coverage of scale coat over scale coat 2 better but at this point Scalecoat like floquil is  history so I have been using true color and Vallejo where I can find something close. Micro mark does have some of the old Floquil railroad colors in its own brand by Vallejo.sorry to see Scalecoat go as I loved there spray cans.

I did an experiment this afternoon.  See pictureIMG_20230731_164727088_HDR

This is scalecoat I paint on sample material.

The rectangular piece is raw evergreen styrene (the fuzz is dirt where I dropped it).

The round piece is off a MPC era GP7, It is gray, my guess is ABS as it is harder than known styrene.

If anyone knows what the pill bottle is, that's another type of plastic.

As of two hours, there has been no reaction.
