Here's a problem I had with a new Lionel Legacy Burlington Northern SD-60 Engine (6-28312).

After carefully unpacking and doing an initial oil, lube, and adding smoke fluid, the first run allowed me to enjoy a scraping sound coming from the rear motor/truck area. Given my recent history with poor build quality on Lionel high-end engines, I was actually expecting something like this. However this time there was a relatively simple fix.

Sorry about the sloppy video quality and rambling, but I never set out to make a video on this. I had my iPhone with me and thought I'd capture some of the steps live as I took it apart.  When I was able to fix it, I thought it would be useful to someone in a similar situation.

In the end, simply re-seating the gear collar into the sprocket and slightly bending the screw tabs on the motor mount towards the frame allowed the motor to be screwed tightly to the frame and seems to have solved the problem.

I really thought I would see evidence of the flywheel hitting the inside of the shell because Eric Siegel had a similar issue recently that he posted about.  However, even though I didn't see anything obvious, I would guess the sound *was* the flywheel hitting the inside of the shell because the motor was tilted to one side.  In any case, the more I think about running it with the drive coupling in the position it was in, the more I realize how lucky I was it didn't bind up on the motor shaft sprocket and snap something off. Not that I had a choice...the video of the scraping sound was the initial run...somehow I just figured something would go wrong.
