Excited, have benchwork up for my first layout other than Christmas. The top is half inch plywood covered with one inch insulation board. Is there a way to cover the seams in the board or do I just not worry about it? No gaps, just seams. Thought I would ask before I paint it flat medium brown! Thanks for any responses!

Ignore them; cover them with some form of scenery.
The seam is of no consequence. How about cutting/carving a piece of insulation board to create a raised section of terrain which covers the seam? It will make your scenery look more realistic. There should be some terrain height variation on a layout. The real world is not perfectly flat.

I would think some self-stick drywall tape would suffice. Those are my plans.
If you like to scenic, the seams will stand out unless you put on several layers of ground foam, preprinted roadway or some structures. Although I use all three on my layouts, not everything gets covered. I prefer the exposed areas to be smooth, so I fill and sand smooth with joint compound (spackle). To fill larger gaps I start with painters caulk then smooth with joint compound.
It will glue together with a bead of great stuff foam, sand smooth after it dries.
I just use brown duct tape and paint over it with flat earth-brown paint and then sprinkle some green and yellow fine turf over it while the paint is still wet to cover up any lines. Never had an issue.
Thanks for the replies! This forum is truly a blessing for neophytes like myself! Richie I have never seen brown duct tape, where do you get it?
Amazon - lots of different colors available:
What do you mean by insulation board ? I used Celotex also called soundboard. The paper fiber board, not foam. This is how I covered the seams. I had some old white cotton bed sheets, cut into 3 inch wide strips. Mixed white glue and water, brushed glue mix over the seam, soak the cotton strips in the glue mix. Then carefully spread the strips over the seam, careful not to get wrinkles or bubbles, brush on some more glue mix, let dry. Then paint with earth color brown. The seams are hard to see. After adding ground cover they are totally gone.

I used masking tape and also drywall tape and mud. Then I put a thin skim coat of drywall mud over almost everything anyways so it didn't end up standing out.
Thanks for the reply Steve! I used the green insulation board from Lowe's, same as the pink and blue stuff. Thinking I will paint as is, start landscaping etc and then hide with tape anywhere not covered by something then paint over it and sprinkle ground cover! The only trouble with a first layout is you know you're going to make rookie mistakes and you drive yourself crazy trying to think of everything! I am sure this isn't the last question I ask here as things progress! LOL
Use foam construction adhesive on the very edge and butt together. Let dry under weight.
Or not.
Hey, I know! Menards has a lot of buildings and cars you can place over all the exposed seams!
Thanks for the suggestion Bro, but I'm thinking I could cover them with box trucks and trees! LOL

I don't have any extra trees, but if you need a box truck let me know! See they have a new BNSF truck?
I am seriously thinking of taking one of my Korber buildings and turning it into a box truck manufacturing facility! LOL

WalMart has cheap stuff in the Office supply section in colors.
Tape just makes two more smaller lines. Fill it with a narrow bead of caulk and finger it flat.
Korbor building sounds like a great idea! Carl has the right idea with the caulk, Just wet your finger and smooth it in!
All the suggestions are good ones and I appreciate them but I think I will go with Carl's idea anywhere I need to once I get structures etc down! Normally there wouldn't be so many seams but this layout is an odd shape, almost trapezoidal so lots of piecing together! Thanks guys! Stay tuned! LOL
Hey Bro, How about some pictures?
I spackled all my seams, sanded them & painted my entire Layout with a primer & then a latex paint!! Not a Seam showing!!
Use the woodland scenics roll of ground cover. Done deal. Easy, looks good and gives you a ground cover base instantly to work off of.
