Don't know if it will help you, but I buy replacement wicks for tiki torches. They are 2 for $3 at lowes. You can trim them with a hobby knife and a 2 pack will do multiple engines.
I have always used MTH wicks. they are very good.

Lionel and MTH.
I get the Lionel rope wicking. I've used Tiki torch but stopped. the Lionel wicking worked better. It's been a while since I've change an MTH wick but would probably just use the Lionel as well.
I started using tiki torch wicks. Biggest reason, very readily available.
I'm certainly no expert, but I haven't noticed any difference.

Are we talking the sleeve that fits over the heating resistor? if so, here's a heads up.
Well stocked electronics stores sell expandable woven fiberglass wire loom which is about 1/4" dia. IIRC it's about $10 for 3'. That's probably 2 or 3 lifetimes worth.

The Lionel wick (rope style) is the best ever. Lionel also makes a compressed fiberglass wick. That is not so good. The Lionel part number is 691SMKP008 for the good stuff. Nothing anywhere is any better. I use it in my MTH repairs also.
Bruce, Lionel does not use the sleeve any more. Mike Reagan threw away thousands a few years ago. Somewhere is one of his informative video clips showing him cutting the sleeve off and shreading the wicking I mentioned and installing it in a smoke unit.
I've had good luck with MTH braided wicks. I pick up a few when I go to York at the MTH parts booth.
Ah! Thanks Marty. Never having gotten inside any of the newer smoke generators I wasn't aware of the use of wicks.

Chris, that stuff is NG. Everyone can use what they want. Myself, I want to do a job one time and do it right with the correct parts. Many things will do the job somewhat, the long haul is what is desired.
I go to the LHS and pick up MTH wicks
