I have several older tmcc locs that use the 8057 smoke unit. I've done the general updates... remove resistor sleeve, replace wicking , enlarge air hole. In a conversation with Mike Reagan, he made one more suggestion to really kick things up a notch. He suggested replacing the old ceramic 27 ohm resistor with the current version of the 27 ohm resistor. Apparently the old ceramic resistors do not perform anywhere near as well as the current version. So I ordered a few replacements. Put them in and it's a night and day difference. No need for a lower ohm resistor, no need for an ac regulator with 8 ohm resistors. Such a simple change and only $2 per resistor! I've included a pic of the two. the part number for the new 27 ohm resistor is 600-8141-055. If you want a simple cost effective upgrade, give it a try. I was surprised at the difference.

nice.
does anyone have a list of lionel engines and the resister they take?
pretty sure I assembled abot 3500+ loco lists (parts lists) on lionelsupport.com! Lol
mike
I think they ment condensed to smokers by unit type and/or by restance value with the locos id's after that; Kinda like the older E unit lists. Or a list of Type1 pulmores, seperate form type 2, etc.
Any Lionel fan driven smoke unit without the AC Regulator in a TMCC locomotive uses the 27 ohm resistor, at least I don't recall any that used a different value. If it has the AC regulator, they have a 6 or 8 ohm resistor, and the recommendation is to replace the 6 ohm with an 8 ohm to prolong the life of the AC regulator module.
John.
Is that as per your experience or a Lionel tech release!

I'm pretty sure Lionel recommended it in the past, I know I read it somewhere. I've done several, and it didn't seem to impact the smoke, and it did reduce the current through the regulator. Since I've replaced a number of regulator modules, I do anything I can to give them a longer lease on life.
