There is a large Methodist conference center on a Lake here in our area that is jokingly referred to as 'Methodist Mecca' by a  (Methodist) pastor friend. It has a large older hotel overlooking the lake that closes for several months right after Christmas each year but has extensive Christmas displays in the lobby and the extended first floor area. One of the directors asked us if we could set up the layout in one of their conference rooms during the noon and evening meal times for the public and guests to see.

We started Saturday and will be there through the 20th -21st daily. We can have a donation jar out and a perk is that whoever is running the trains gets to eat at the wonderful buffet gratis!  It's quite a spread and may just put 10 pounds on each of us by show's end!

Plans are to visit a nearby nursing home with the layout for a day on our way back to the clubhouse.

Club member Jerry Beavers built two great winter scene dioramas that truly look cold!

My wife created a nice 'traveling Nativity' last year that is running again to help spread the reason and the joy of the Christmas season.

Santa brought me a beautiful Lionel N&W J No. 611 that was 'professionally' modified with 4 chuffs and enhanced smoke output by Alex Malliae. Surprisingly, it actually negotiated the 048 Fastrack curves.

Ed, we only have about 8 members with just 4 or 5 of us 'active' and working at it. My wife and I haved moved nearby so I volunteered to cover most of the slots if need be but hopefully some of the others will 'step it up'!

She certainly smokes well Alex - you did a great job. It still smokes some from below too!

Sam:

If/when time permits, consider taking a series of photos that might be used in the magazine next December.  Would need hi-res images, and a variety of scenes including overall, mid-range, and close-up shots (with many or most including trains, if possible).  Your group could earn a couple of C-notes when the feature is published.  Contact me if you need more info.

This same offer is extended to other groups and individuals who have Christmas layouts they may like to share and who feel comfortable with their camera work.

Thanks so much Lee for your kind comments!

When we were starting over last year and had decided to build another layout using Fastrack, the club treasury was empty. I asked here on the Forum if anyone had  some used track for sale cheap and Lee and Rick Wells both offered track for free. We are still greatly appreciative to both of you guys for your generosity!

Where is that hotel?  Photos are impressive, and I am assuming it is not the Greenbrier (which I've only seen once and don't remember....I was more interested in standing on the station platform and watching an Amtrak passenger train stop there).  Is that hotel open to public or church group only, at least for the buffets?  While driving the Blue Ridge Parkway I wandered off course and blundered on a couple of old historic hotels where people once rode in on trains to "take the waters".  This structure looks like it could be a similar hotel.

A club with the name "Smokey Mountain" makes one wonder if anybody in it models

the Little River RR, which logging territory is now Great Smokey Mountain Nat. Park?

Ahhhh...  The future of model railroading!

The young fella in the yellow shirt is really excited and wants to start in trains. Hopefully Dad will bring him by the club some Tuesday evening.

Elvis is in town for Christmas and invites everyone to come for egg nog and hot chocolate!

Club member Ed Rynning's wife is from Tupelo MS and Elvis was a neighborhood playmate when they were kids. She has an 'Elvis Train' that we run..
