I have a question for those out there with far greater knowledge than my own regarding the potential of upgrading the sound system in my Lionel 4-6-4 Hudson (6-28007). This model is an early TMCC unit that is currently equipped with the Signal Sound/Rail Sound System. I would like to upgrade it to the latest version of the RailSound Commander from what was ERR. I have a local dealer that has them in stock.

All of the sound system components are located in the tender which is attached to the locomotive using a 4-pin wiring harness. After tracing down the wires in the harness, one wire controls the reverse light, one wire is the common and one wire is the trigger for the electro coupler leaving a gray colored wire which I'm assuming is the serial data connection between the tender and the locomotive. A.C. track power for everything in the tender is provided by two pickup rollers under the tender. Ground comes from the locomotive through the harness.

After reviewing the wiring diagrams for the RailSound Commander, it requires both a serial data and a trigger connection. The trigger would go to a reed switch/magnet setup on one the wheels. I have upgraded this locomotive with one of GRJ's Chuff Generator and Super-Chuffer II PCB along with a fan power smoke unit. The Chuff Generator's signal output is tied into the wire that was formerly connected to the output side of cherry switch. The chuff signal is obviously getting to the sound board located in the tender so I can only assume it's coming through the serial connection wire, correct?

So, if one wanted to install a RailSound Commander in the tender of this unit, to replace the current sound boards, how would one go about getting the chuff signal to it or will it get there though the current serial connection wire?

If anyone out there has any experience in this upgrade, your input is more than welcome.

The chuff comes over the serial cable.  To install the new RS Commander, you just need power, ground, and serial data.

Thank you GRJ.   I knew someone out there would know the answer to this question.

Your response makes perfect sense and verifies my own thinking on topic. Just wanted some confirmation. That chuff generator is working so well that I now want a sound system worthy of it's abilities.
