I have a straight section that has to run near a wall. How far from the edge of the ties (Ross track) to wall would be good? I am thinking 1.5 inches since the engine will be running straight, well out of the 072 curve near the wall.

That is close but will work if you never plan for fronts/flats or foliage.
My own practice is 6" from the center rail to the wall or benchwork edge. But I like to eventually install fronts, trees,etc, or have a narrow road.
We have articulated engines and 21" passenger cars so we went with 4" from the wall to the center rail and that was more than enough room after extensive testing.
