For anyone in need of a steam fix, here is the first of several posts in the near future from some recent steam charters across the country.  On January 30, 2014, Pete Lerro held a photo special on the City of Prineville Railroad in Prineville, OR.  Motive power was the Mount Emily Lumber Company 3-truck Shay #1.  For the east coast viewers, this engine resided at the Cass Scenic Railroad for many years until being repatriated to Oregon in the early 1990s.

There is actually a good forest with a 2+% grade on the far end, but we stayed out in the flats for the vast majority of the day.  When you are used to the Appalachian Mountains, Oregon does take a bit of getting used to....

I don't understand your comment.  These locomotives were designed for the logging industry and many including this one were shipped to the west coast from the factory in Lima, OH.  Many Shay design locomotives were built in Portland, OR under the Willamette  name.  The 'high desert country' which is around 3,000 feet above sea level is the valley where the rivers and railroad run (excellent location for a mill) amongst 10,000' mountains where the logs are harvested.
