This is the time and place for us to stoke up the fires in our favorite steam locomotives and get them rollin’ down the line. Then, we take photos and videos of them and share them and our excitement about them.

In 1928, Alco built five D-1a 4-6-6T bi-directional steam locomotives for use in commuter service on the Boston & Albany Railroad between South Station in Boston and the suburbs. One of the routes on which these engines ran was a circuit – outbound on the main line to Riverside, inbound on the Highland Branch to South Station, and in the opposite direction. These double-ended engines didn’t have to be turned at the end of a run.

The tank engines had 63-inch drivers, ran at 215 psi boiler pressure, weighed 352,000 pounds, and developed 41,600 pounds tractive effort. They were the biggest tank engines ever to run in the United States and were designed for rapid acceleration.

K-Line delivered the first O gauge model of a B&A 4-6-6T tank engine with TMCC in 2005. Lionel acquired the tooling and made a Legacy version in 2020. I own examples of each but, unfortunately, I don’t have B&A passenger cars, so the photos and videos show B&A #400 on my 12’-by-8’ layout pulling a wood passenger car with truss rods that I built from a kit by Labelle woodworking of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Hello StDaySun people!  My steamer of the day is my Atlas New Haven 0-6-0 no. 2334.  This engine was updated to MTH PS3 after I damaged the original (troublesome) tether.

No. 2334 is pulling one of my favorite trains, a beer train, featuring an Atlas “Hanley’s Ale” reefer.  My wife didn’t object to the purchase of this car because her father and brother were both named James Hanley!  Alas, neither one of them was a brewer, her father was a firefighter and her brother was a periodontist.

Arnold, Thanks for getting up a head of steam this morning. Here is my Lionel consolidation that I bought blank from Mr Muffin’s trains. He sent it to Harry Heinkel to be lettered PRSL and be lightly weathered. Here it is with a string of RMT Sand cars that I picked up from Larry at Holly Beach Trains at YORK on Thursday. IMG_3469

Been running my Lionchief +2.0 Reading 0-6-0t. These little buggers are a blast to run. Lionel did a great job with these BTW. The tooling is the same as their older 0-6-0t conventional models. I have a Santa Fe model.
This engine runs with either the universal remote or the Cab3/ Lionchief apps. App control offers more features and better speed control. The sound set includes freight yard sounds too.

Looks great Gene. I'm resisting the temptation for now. Really tough considering that Lionel included a LIRR model in this run.

Here are a pair of Brimtoy (UK) steamers for you.  The red "Britania" 4-6-0 (as lithographed) from the post war period, likely the 1950's and the "Silver Streak" a pre-war representation of the "Jubilee" locomotive from 1936-37, IRL this locomotive was used to  celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935.   Both are clockwork and O gauge and they both still operate.  They are posed on either side of the Brimtoy small signal box which has its roots in pre-war but was produced until about 1951.

I agree.  I am modern command only, but I have said before it if fun to see and read Don's posts.  Reminds me of when I ran trains with my brother on his prewar Marx layouts.
