Adding 5 drops of smoke fluid to the stack on the sd 70 yield no smoke but when I put in fluid using the mega steam wire type fluid applicator and put the tip in the bottom of the smoke it smokes good. What is the deal. Mike R gets his diesel to smoke on the demonistration of the cutwave transformer but then I am in legacy mode with the transformer wide open at 18 volts and not cut wave then.

For an initial prime, 5 drops isn't enough. I go for the full 20 for a new engine.
I'll second the "5 drops isn't enough", along with 4 of those 5 drops probably get trapped in the grate or just below it in the stack outlet.
Using the needle filler is getting the fluid down into the wicking where its supposed to be.
Sounds perfectly normal to me, keep using the needle filler.
Most diesels are a bit of a pain to get fluid into, especially those with dual outlets, like early geeps and f units.
For the Legacy diesels like the GP-7 that have the removable top over the stacks, I pop the top off and charge the smoke unit directly, much easier than trying to coax the fluid down that long chute.
thanks for the info,
