Yes it was January, then Febuary, now March, it is waiting in line for a slot to open up, He has a lot of european engines to make I am told. The new Gereman engine is supposely selling like Nickle beer. Ok, If I do not get it by March I am going to...wait some more.

It wouldn't really be a real apples-to-apples comparison.  There are visual differences between the GS-2 and GS-4 classes of Daylight locomotives.  The GS-2 had an exposed cab (open in the rear) and the GS-4 had fully enclosed "all weather" cabs.  The GS-2 has a single headlight, the GS-4 has a headlight and a MARS (oscillating) light above it.  The GS-2 also had narrower main (connecting) rods on the running gear than the GS-4.  The GS-2 also had smaller diameter driver wheels, although I doubt that MTH or Lionel factored that in with their models.

The Lionel GS-4 would be the closer comparison to the MTH GS-4, although the Lionel version uses the same smaller main rods that the GS-2 uses, and they got the Fireball logo backwards on the fireman's side.  From what I've seen the handrails along the boiler also look a bit oversized to me compared to the MTH model.

The best visual comparison to size up the MTH or Lionel version is the Sunset/3rd Rail brass version; that one is the best in terms of overall detail and accuracy.

John, thanks a bunch for sharing all this with us. Actually, one of the reasons I went with the MTH GS4 over Lionels GS2 was the fact that the GS4 had the mars light which to me is something I love in front of an engine. I believe Lionel has gotten better but I also felt that MTH smoke units seem to have more smoke pouring from the stacks.

IF MTH had offered the GS4 in something other than 4449 (I have the 3rd rail "Definitive GS4 model" of the #4449) I would buy it.

I don't have the Lionel Legacy GS4 #4436,I've been on the hunt. for that one!

I hope Lionel will rerun the AC-12 with Legacy and new cab numbers.

Your prayers have been answered ( AC12's).

Check out the new Lionel 2014 catalog
