Hello all,

With deciding to stick to Lionels non legacy TMCC item (I know I know..) There's some options for me looking to upgrade/add engines to my stable since I can't get some dupilcate roads on some options, I have to look else where.

What this brings to me is; I have a Lionel TMCC/RS/oddyssy equipped engine I want to swap into a another (namely a Weaver century) can the 'guts' be swapped over ideally to the other unit without much modification?

Anyone be willing to do such a task?

Thanks.

Basically you will need to unsolder the wires to the motor(s) and move it over and rehook it up, if your bringing everything including sound. ( yes theres a little more to it like probably unsoldering the speaker and unattaching the coil couplers to get them over.

If you can put the engines side by side and do one wire at a time if you have to. I did this between two Lionel engines back some time ago ( about 5 or 6 years)

Question thou, why don't you just buy a set-up from ERR. ( on my second thought thou I wished I had done this that I'm asking)

Its not a simple task. The reason being Odyssey uses a tach sensor on one of the motors. You would have to add a tach sensor to a motor on the Weaver engine which involves pulling the flywheel. The only way it would be a direct motor swap would be if both engines had the same type of motor and both motors had the same worm. The latter is unlikely and swapping gears is not easy. Its easy to damage the motor shaft.

ERR cruise is the way to go here.

Thank you for the replies.

The reason why I ask is that I have thus engine (Lionel GP30) already at my disposal. The unit getting the swap would either be a Weaver U25 or C628

I have read up on the ERR cruise, but where does that put me with the TMCC/sounds? These are old QSI equipped engines.

The ultimate goal is to have a companion locomotive to a Lionel Seaboard System U30 and Erie Lackawanna U33C, for Mu service.

You could reuse the Railsounds boards and R2LC. Just replace the DCDS motor driver with an ERR Cruise M. ERR makes a Cruise M specific for Odyssey diesels. That would eliminate the need for the Tach sensor.

How easy the swap would be would depend on the board layout. Some Weaver engines are true scale while some Lionel engines are wider than scale to accommodate the electronics. Make measurements before taking things apart.

If the frame of the Weaver is similar to the frame of the Lionel and you were OK with a truck swap, this might be easier to do than first indicated.  Also, if the gear assembly (worm) on the motors are the same you might be able to swap a motor in with the ody tach reader (this is less likely).

If you want some one to do the swap, I can.  I actually have a ODY flywheel and tach assembly that is off an engine and might be able to put them on your weaver motor.  Or, worst case is installing all the TMCC guts with exception of ODY Motor Driver and having your TMCC set up with Back Emf vice ODY.  This is what Pete is mentioning.  Again, I can do this if the full swap won't work.  E-mail is in my profile.  G
