The turnout term is mostly from model railroading to differentiate the track assembly from an electrical switch used to turn power on/off. The prototype assembly is a "turnout" but the moving components are referred to as parts of a switch (e.g switch points, switch stand, switch plate, switch rod).

Good info in there for any of you wanting to try your hand at making your own turnouts ur switches ur them thingys that make the engine go a different way.
Not hard to do just takes a little education and some time.
This is one of my hand made 0-54 switches made from Atlas track.
It looks a little off in that pic because I hadn't spiked the rails yet
The other is a number 10 N scale curved turnout I made.
