I am 45 and am always loved train sets. I have no electrical exp. but I had gotten my father-in-law's old 3 rail lionel set. I sanded almost all the track and had cleaned all the cars. I even put money into the transformer, which can can handle 2 trains at once. I am very happy and I went on eBay and won some more track and a few accessories. I would like to get more automated cars like the ice car or something that is fun to watch. I am still a kid at heart.

But the main reason for this is I have no idea on were to start! I made a 4'x8' table but it doesn't seem big enough room for all I want. Can someone help me?

Obviously, in ) gauge, the more space for the layout the better. There are some nice 4 x 8 layouts. A sweet spot seems to be 5 x 9 due the track sizes. You'll need to determine the largest area that you have or want to build the layout in.

From there, start some planning and reading. Search this forum for small, 4 x 8 or 5 x 9 layouts and you'll find ideas. Then the internet searches will reveal more. Atlas. MTH and Lionel's new catalogs have some ideas. Then are layout books.

I discovered this article which may help provide a direction for you. (Document attached) It employs the fundamentals of some of the well known layout designers and a lot of the basic experience in one place. Easy read. It's attached.

When you have specifics such as maximum space, what looks like fun, etc., then you can design your layout. You can have an interesting 4 x 8 with an operating accessory or two.

Spend some time on education now. You don't need to be an expert at anything. There's help in this forum and on the web and in books to help you. It's the start of your journey with O gauge trains! Have fun!

PS. Sanding the track was not the best way to clean it up. Search the forum and you'll find the best methods arrived at through years of trial and error for tubular track.

I see that you live in Jersey. There are lots of O gauge guys and gals there. There are lots of clubs. I have always found O gauge people from Jersey to be very friendly and willing to share their knowledge. If you are in the north, definitely make contact with the  New Jersey HiRailers.
