Floods Close Powder River Basin Lines
June 4, 2015 | 4:54 p.m. CDT
Union Pacific's double main line to the Powder River Basin is closed and severely damaged due to flooding of the Niobrara River near Lusk, Wyoming.
The Highway 85 overpass in Lusk has collapsed onto the tracks, with nine miles of track and multiple bridges washed out between Lusk and Manville, Wyoming. Several trains are trapped in the flood zone.
Crews, work trains, heavy equipment and materials are arriving in the area to begin repairs once water has receded. No injuries have been reported.
Some trains are detouring over other routes. There is no estimated time for the line's reopening.
Track and bridge inspections continue along the rail line between Shawnee and the Wyoming/Nebraska border.
