Hi,I have added some tubular Lionel O gauge track to my layout.I like the look but I want to calm down the big silver shiny rails. How can I weather it?Paint the sides a rust color?Have never done it.Also I am thinking about adding ties using 1/4 inch luan strips and painting them. Thanks,Nick

Nick:
I've made ties from luan ply (for O-27) and from 1/4" regular plywood (for O). They were stained dark brown then hot glued to the underside of the rail. Lengths of the rail was then taken outside and lightly spray painted with brown primer paint, mostly for the rail. The whole thing was then sprayed lightly with flat black paint. The top of the rail had to be scrubbed of the paint coatings along with the upper inside of the running rails. Not quite museum quality, but a great improvement over the standard shiny trainset track.

Nick, I use O27 tubular track and spray it with Rust-Oleum Camouflage Ultra Flat color. You can get it from Amazon or possibly your Ace Hardware store. It is a brown slightly redish color and looks marvelousssss. The nice part about a rattle can is you can deflect the over spray by using a heavy weight paper to block the spray. Once applied simply use a rag and wipe the top of the rails off.
