The day seems to never come on my layout.    There is always more detail to add, more models to build, revisions to the operating systems (car cards, switch lists etc), changes to the train schedule, and of couse, revisions here and there to trackwork as operations point out the need for the changes.

With a layout built for operations (I use switchlists but most use car cards), the layout is like a game board, and every operation session is a game.    even though the trains that run usually stay the same in terms of where they go, the cars that they move change and the industries they switch change, and the switching problems to solve are different.    It is like playing a game of pinochile.   The rules are the same, but each hand you are dealt is different.

So I don't see it ever being "done".

Well...change is constant rings true for me. I have three ( the G scale garden layout, a small Hornby layout and the O layout and...it looks like we are going to move back to Wisconsin from North Carolina. Ugh..I knew this would happen! While I am dreading the tear downs ( I might leave the outdoor in place ) I guess I am not finished just by circumstances. Carefully packing the whole collection is a whole project in itself. I let "professional" movers do it once..never again. So I am finished and not finished with any layout at the same time.

The day comes when you've completed your layout, and trains are running.

WHAT?!?!?!  You HAVE to complete your layout BEFORE you run trains?!?!?!  Now what do I do, I've been running trains all this time on an unfinished layout, the shame

I have changed my 12x12 layout at least once every year I've had it.  Seems like I'm always finding another/better way to do something or needed a siding where none existed.  Just last week I installed an Atlas turntable, even had to make a 2'x8' extension to fit it in.  I never finished the scenery in this spot anyway so I guess it was a good thing.  But now I have to get down to finishing at lest the ground cover.  Not only that but I was day-dreaming this morning about knocking holes in 2 walls so I could install tunnel portals and continue the layout all the way around upstairs!!!

The saga continues

Hopefully in the next year and a half I will call it respectful to all and some what overboard for those  that's not involved in our hobby.

Completed, never going to happen in my life time. I learn something and see something all the time ( especially on OGR) that peaks my curiosity and tends to want me to change something, modify, replace, build, ect.

I don't think that attitude will ever change. But, it's fun.
