My 12'-by-8' layout has three independent loops. The outer loop is O-72 with two switches and a passing siding near the rear of the layout. The middle loop is O-54 with a passing siding near the front of the layout. The inner loop is O-36. There is also a short spur off the middle loop (under the coal tower). This lets me keep six trains on the layout and run three at a time. Track is Atlas O. Power is two MTH Z-4000s operating conventionally with block control on the outer loops. One throttle controls each of the three loops. You may want to consider an O-72 outer loop on which you could run any large O gauge locomotive that you purchase in the future. You could also make the middle loop O-63 and the inner loop O-54.

Do you have a track plan

I no longer have the track plan. An article about the layout appeared in O Gauge Railroading magazine (Run 214 - April/May 2006) and shows the track plan. The picture below is the best view I can take that shows the track geometry. On the O-72 outer loop, the switches for the passing siding are inserted along the 8-foot side of the table and the straight track on the 12-foot side of the table uses two Atlas O 10-inch straight track pieces on either side of a 40-inch piece of rigid straight track (across the bridges) - so the straight track length is 60 inches (5 feet). The straight track length on the middle and inner loops is also 5 feet. The switch location on the O-54 loop can be seen in front of the transformer at the lower right of the photo. The track plan at the opposite end of the layout is a mirror image of what you see in this view except for the short stub under the coal tower.

I have a 12x8 layout...but unfortunately no track plan. When I built this 16 years ago I just bought a bunch of track and dumped it on the table and  tried a few different ideas.I pretty much achieved what I had in my head.

outside loop is 081 inside loop is 072 and is interconnected. The 3rd track is 054 and is a reversing track (S shaped) and is also the lead to the small 2 track yard. There is also a small engine facility off the second loop and finally a small non connected 031 elevated loop.7A2F54A0-492B-4DEB-9F0E-2A8F838DBE3769A7C4B4-EF04-4DFC-98A9-B124239B69EA9B322D3C-E6F8-4E15-BB93-FCF4F39C4BE9D69C9A59-6BEB-4156-9927-15B1EFC33C9BDCCB547F-6952-4683-A18D-B9FF092408B9E1793733-CF19-4E66-AC8D-8776F62FA087
