A 2024 Christmas layout memory

Last week for a change of pace, I showed some of the farm area on the left side:

This week, how about a piece of the middle?  My version of a lumber yard.

Boston & Albany 2-8-4 #1401 is a model of a Lima Berkshire freight engine – the first of its type to enter service. The “Berkshire” name was taken from the hills in western Massachusetts through which ran the B&A Railroad, where the first such locomotive was tested and greatly outperformed the Mikados and Consolidations that came before it. #1401 was the first in a fleet of fifty-five B&A Berkshires and the inspiration for Lionel’s postwar 726.

It’s a recently released Lionel Legacy model (2231340) 26-½ inches in length that runs on O-54. The model’s details include a huge firebox, feedwater heater, superheater and piping, large B&A square sandbox, steam turret, booster engine on the rear truck, and booster exhaust stack just ahead of the main stack.

Berkshire #1401 was delivered from Lima in February 1926. It had 63-inch driving wheels, ran at 240 pounds-per-square-inch steam pressure, and weighed 389,000 pounds. Tractive effort was 69,400 pounds and 81,400 pounds with booster. #1401 was scrapped in February 1949.

Scott - thanks so much for starting us off for this fine weekend!   Here are some pics taken from around the layout over the last year.

It's the 1950's and a slow moving Fairbanks - Morse   H-10-44  leads a train of automobiles carriers through Butler Junction.   Tower operator Willis O'Neil took this shot with his Kodak.  

A Western Maryland Consolidation rounds the bend at Butler Junction. Milkman Gordy Gustin loads his milk truck while workers in the freight receiving area are kept busy with incoming freight.

There's always some action at the yard.

First, thank you to everyone for their comments last week regarding the completion of my layout after 27 years and five months. I tried to respond to everybody, but if I missed you, please accept my apologies.

So after almost a year of posting images of the town of Mapleton under construction, here is something different...a panoramic view of an eastbound 1960's era PRR train ruining in the valley between the Juniata River and PA State Route 103. Carlisle Gap is in the distance. This will be my opening slide for a clinic I will be giving at the Railroad Prototype Modelers' meet here in the Pittsburgh area March 21-23.

The restored NYC 19144 is displayed on my layout and has become a weekly hangout for the railroad retirees. I can imagine the knowledge and history that’s shared from these fellas.

Thank you Walt. From an article I read, the original NYC 19144 was restored and is displayed at the NY State fairgrounds.

Gene, great idea to display a caboose as a mini-offline gathering "park like" area for the senior crew...  You just gave me a new idea for an addition to the layout...now I just need to find a caboose to retire from service.  I only have two operating, so I'll have to acquire another...

Thanks Paul, when I read about the restoration of 19144, I searched and finally found the last one at Jr Junction. Its purpose was for static display only, not running on the layout.

This past Saturday, a small group from my club went to a nice train show in Idependence, OH, and afterward took another trip to the Corner Field Model RR Museum (one of us had never been before).  Here are some pix:

After the visit, we had a great dinner at the Iron Horse Saloon in nearby Burton, OH.  This will probably be our go-to place for future visits to Corner Field!
