Hi Guys. OK I guess this model is a "toy" train but I just repainted and reassembled this Lionel Lines PRR 6-8-6. It runs ok but it sounds like a coffee grinder. I checked the action between the worm and worm gear and it is smooth. All the noise seems to be coming from the motor. Here's some pics of before and after.

Put a drop or two of oil on the Armature bearings. Should take care of it.
Worn, out of round armature bushings will allow the armature to vibrate. That is normally where that sound originates.
Not to deviate from your OP too much, I have a 671 and 681 and I like your restore job. I would like to do the same but without the gray front. I assume it was just a fairly normal paint removal task, but if there were any trick things I'd certainly like to hear about them. What color/brand of black paint did you use? Did you use a spray can or airbrush? I've lined up a Lionel rubber stamp for the 671/681 numbers from JLM trains.
Hello Texgeekboy
I looked at a number of pics on the 'net to see how I should paint it and went with the scheme I used as I saw both prototype pics and model pics with the same paint scheme. There were pics showing the smoke box painted the same as the rest of the engine but I chose the other scheme just to have a little variation. I'm afraid I have no tips or tricks as I just brush painted this loco right over the old finish. In string lighting you can see the brush strokes but otherwise it looks nice enough for my purposes.
