I was wondering I have an area 12'long and 22" wide can I use 2" pink foam board to create a town with roads and buildings will it hold the weight?

I have a double track line that if a derailment or? happens I would need to raise this to fetch or re-rail cars. I thought of plywood but a lot of weight to deal with and this is a 4' wide area in all with the town area being in the rear most part.

Thank you for any advice on this.

Hi

My entire layout is covered with 2" foam, but with plywood underneath.  I use the foam by itself over a few areas - and it is pretty darn rigid.  I do not think you would have any difficulty supporting that size area with only 2" foam (as long as it has a decent about of support at its edges).

Hope this helps.

thank you am going to try it I have 1x4 board attached to entire 12' run at both sides so somewhere in 1-1 3/4" for it to rest on no cross bracing and that might aid in the rigidity of it as well only problem here in sw deserts no one stocks it.

I did find a 1" thick blue foam board in 2x8 sheets I could attach 2 together? if so what can I use to glue caulk or? so I can still retain a smooth surface for town area?

Hi-

I use wood glue, and secure with a few drywall screws as a clamp.  After it dries, you can remove the screws, or leave them in if you like.

Avoid using anything harsh, like regular liquid nails, it can eat at the foam.  They have special adhesives for foam, but I found wood glue to work just as well, and cheaper.
