I've got an older Lionel General locomotive, that only runs in reverse, no matter where I position the e-unit lever or how I apply or turn off the power. Is there some special way to service these? Should graphite be used?

What is the cab number?
I think it's an 1862. No smoke unit.
OK, are you getting reverse-quiet neutral-reverse-quiet neutral, or reverse-hum-reverse-hum or something else when activating the direction button? There should be some difference of some sort when the reverse unit lever is left, vs. right.
I get no noise whatsoever. Wonder if a wire is disconnected? Guess I'll have to lift the shell and see what's going on.
Check the wiring.
