I was at the 2017 O Scale National in Enfield, CT on Friday. I enjoyed it but did not take photos. Saw lots of brass, two-rail locomotives including one by Kohs priced at $3500 (I think it was a New York Central Hudson). Also lots of Atlas O two-rail locomotives and rolling stock but saw no three-rail items... There was only one layout that I recall, and it was a nice three-rail modular, about 16'-by-4', by Brian Inch of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine (modelrailscenes.com). I attended three presentations, all of which were excellent; "70 Years of Building in O-Scale" (structure modeling by Herm Botzow); "Modeling New England Mills in O Scale" by Brian Whiton; and "Dead Rail Operation" by Don Sweet - who discussed battery powered operation for O gauge trains (rcsofne.com). The last of these interests me and I'm thinking about a battery conversion of an old Weaver RS-3 diesel. Sorry no photos.

I went, and had a good time. For my $30 I got several hours of great enjoyment shuffling through the boxes and baskets and tables full of everything imaginable relative to 2R scale. Seemed like a lot rolling stocks was available including passenger cars of all sorts. Some vendors with scenic details, including a couple who had completed structures for sale. O scale Turnouts showed off his latest turnouts, Pat Mucci brought a ton of stuff from his P & D Hobbies., Crow River Products had beautiful examples of all there white metal kits fully built and painted…mouthwatering stuff. Westport Model Works displayed their full line of detail part etc. Deerfield River Laser had many interesting kits. But many more names just get lost in my recollection frankly, but those were a few I recall. Norm’s O Scale had a ton of brass for sale…he seems to have everything. I picked up a beautiful PSC Center Cupola N6B Pennsy Cabin factory painted like new for $175...made my day. There were a fair number of tables full of the stuff us train nuts seem to amass…and there fun to shuffle through in hopes of finding that odd item…I love these opportunities frankly. Everything from turnouts to turnbuckles. Did not plan to attend any of the clinics, nor any of the layout tours. My time was somewhat limited. I did enjoy talking with the people regardless of what they were selling…train people are generally nice folks. Overall a good show in my opinion..

"You have a good luck to find such O scale conventions in your country........!!!!!!!!"

Yep, it's drought over here as well the only thing I see in O scale for sale is items I sold a few years back!

I think it's a big deal when I win a sale on ebay.  It's the price you pay for being in American O scale in a different country but I like to look at the show pictures and dream. Roo. In West Australia.

We do have O Scale 'Trade' shows in the UK, & they're very good - it's a boom time for British O at the moment, but US-outline stuff is rare, & often over-priced, to match the usual sort of British O scale prices - which, of course, I also think is too much!!

I would love to attend a show or convention that's not 99.9% devoted to HO. Maybe one day I can design a trip to the US around a TCA show in York. I would take 10 suitcases! Meanwhile I'm just boosting the profits of the eBay Global Shipping Program.

If your interest is 2 rail, York TCA is NOT the show you want to take in, as it is primarily 3 rail.

The BIG 2 rail shows are the March Meet in Chicago, Ill., O Scale West in California, and the O Scale National which is a different venue every year. Next year it is at Rockville, Maryland.

Dan. Great issue, shows well covered good photo's drooled all over the screen but what is a 'White Elephant" sale?

SS. I've been to Telford in England four times to the O Gauge Guild annual big show of course 99% is British items I still spend money, of course I go and stay with my son and his family as well musn't forget that!

If I went to an American O scale show I would bring back a reasonable amount of stuff just small items probably would want to buy everything! I allowed a lot when I went to a Hot Rod show in Louisville that's Hot Rod parts of course and I did have a business, now I live on a budget and you must remember the Aust government are talking about changing the rules and charging a tax on ANYTHING brought into the country after July 2017 if it goes through the house, up till now nothing is charged under $1000 I know it's only 10% but add that to the difference in the Aussie dollar price of items are getting high and of course shipping as well if you are not in America. It won't stop me buying things but will slow me down. I have enough stuff as it is, can't sell it been dumping some items in the rubbish bin every week to get rid of it sounds wasteful but would rather trash the stuff than sell it for $2 a boxcar none of my operators want the stuff the local club don't want it. tried to give a portable layout to the local club once all finished and ready to go they didn't want it so I took what I wanted off it and put the rest in a bin terrible waste  I want the space at home to build other things I once liked building layouts now I stay with what I have.  I have an unfinished portable layout set up outside in the shed I think/hope I have found someone who wants it it's free would you believe I will be happy when it's gone time I cleaned up everything it's different over here more outdoor hobbies than indoor and garden railways are very hot outside in the long summer we have doesn't stop some blokes though.

Despite all this I have never regretted modelling American O scale I love the stuff and your real Railroads of years gone by....  Roo. In West Australia.

I converted a Weaver RS3 to battery power a while back, works fine, but I used the BlueRail 2.4Ghz board and a 2000Mah, 9.6v battery pack, using my IPad and the BlueRail app.

There's not a lot of space inside, the battery was 1.1x1.1x3.9 inches, not sure if a larger battery would fit.

There's a number of dead rail systems out, I was well into using the Deltang-based system for steam and BlueRail for diesel by the time I saw what Don was offering and didn't feel like adding a 3rd system to the mix, otherwise I would have given his system a go.

Thanks mate.  The white elephant sale is where people who may have something to don't want any more can sell at the show without needing to buy a table. Could be new or used. I think there is a limit on the number of things you can sell.

By the way, this little guy below is still going strong

Ha Ha I'm laughing, I forgot about that loco Dan. I once had a lot of friends on the forums, lots, somehow I never worked at keeping them I blame myself for that, we have sort of drifted apart.  I'm still here, the layout is still going strong, and my enthusiasm for O scale has never been stronger not so for forums I guess I'm not a team player I've had problems in the past and sometimes in the present with forums although I hope that is over now, I know I would never join Facebook I would last 5 minutes! This photo goes back many years ago one of the blokes sent me the shirt when I was into New York Harbour Railroads.

It's interesting to note that the backdrop behind me is still there considering all the changes that I have made over the years! I would have asked Margaret to take that present photo (I just snapped it) with me in it but a bit hard for her to hold a camera with bandaged hands, besides who wants to look at an old bloke.  Roo AKA Neville.
