As a new BTO set I realize details are limited, however I am hopeful these F3s will pair well with smaller passenger cars.

I have a Lionel Santa Fe FT passenger set from 2009 and the Williams Golden Memories Santa Fe aluminum body set.

Never ordered BTO but this set has me on the fence.  I have a LionelChief Plus steam loco and enjoy the feature set.

Thanks!

Not sure what the 2003 Super Chief set is that you're referring to, but the 2020 set engines will be traditional sized engines. (Note that Lionel "traditional" F-3s, first produced in the Postwar period, are actually scale in physical size, but the detailing is similar to the Postwar period so they're sometimes referred to as "traditional.")

The Lionel FT diesel is scale in size as well, but the F-3 is a bit bigger. These new F-3s will go very well with your Williams aluminum passenger set, which I assume is made up of 15" long cars. The passenger cars that came with your FT set are smaller, I believe, and won't look as good with the F-3s.

Breezinup - Thanks for the reply!

This is the 2003 set I was referring to - a set I wanted but didn't have the cash back then.  This new set might use the same tooling but with updated electronics?

Just measured (not including couplers) :

Williams Vistadome aluminum - 15"

Williams Santa Fe F3 - 12"

Lionel Santa Fe FT - 12"

That set is from 2005, not 2003. The engines are the same as the ones in the new catalog, as far as the bodies. The equipment inside is all different. The 2005 engines have AC Pullmor motors, TMCC and RailSounds. The engines in the new catalog have a different system, with DC can motors, LionChief Plus2 command system, and cruise contol, among other things.

The Williams Golden Memories F-3s are 13" long, the same as Lionel traditional. Williams' old F units were a different mold, a bit odd looking; they may be 12" long, I don't know, I'm not sure what you've got. Regardless, in answer to your question, the engines in the set shown in the new catalog will be the same size as the ones in the 2005 Super Chief set.
