How hard is it going to be to find some of the K-Line cars, like the 4633-41390 Glacier View Dome and the 40038 RPO?

You are in luck; there is a Glacier View full dome on eBay now, listed for $499.00.
Great THANKS!!
You are very welcome.
Are you specifically interested in those cars, or K-Line passenger cars in general? From the way you worded your question, I can’t be certain.
Either way, just set up a saved search on eBay for whatever you are looking for and ask for notifications for when one item is listed.
In this case, by checking on sold items dating back 90 days, I can tell you the GN dome car doesn’t show up in eBay listings very often. The same dealer has been trying to sell the current ones listed for a full month. The price listed is certainly aimed at a spendy collector. The original car probably could have been obtained originally for less than $150. The current market has too few samples sold to establish a consistent price.
Yes, I am specifically looking for the Great Northern 21 inch cars. The Dome and the RPO. I see the current Dome for sale on e-bay is really high priced, and he doesn't seem to be in any hurry to sell. Originally the 6 pack, 21" cars from K-Line, which included the full dome and the vista, sold for msrp@$749.95 = $125 a piece on the average. I have assembled the 4 pack; and all of the 6 pack, but for the full Dome. The RPO was sold separate and have not found one. There are three train shows coming up, maybe I'll find what I need.
Keep at it, Jeff. I paid a premium price, though still less than $200, for the aluminum K-Line 21-inch Milwaukee Road Skytop Lounge car a few years ago on eBay. Lately, I have seen the same car listed for as much as $400.
By saving searches on eBay, I get to see a broader sampling of the products in which I’m interested. I simply wait until the price is right.
Certainly, peruse shows as well, but don’t be disappointed if you don’t see any samples at those shows. It will take time to find what you are looking for, but they are out there.
Good Luck Jeff on that RPO car. I have only seen one on ebay, many years ago, and it went for above $500.
I have since decided that the MTH RPO car, at $60, looks good enough for me.

Yes, I won't be disappointed, but then again.............I know the stuff is out there, just not sure if it will be where I am!

Yea, I wondered about the RPO car. Oh well, like you say, it may be time to just be satisfied with MTH.
There is a hugely satisfying feeling in finding that item you've been hunting for years. Many of us know that feeling well. Keep looking, one day ....
I do have to wonder again - why is nobody using the K-Line molds to make these hugely in demand car sets?
In addition to the ebay listings, try putting a "looking for" ad in the forum buy/sell as well as the other places if you are a member i.e. TTOS / TCA / LCCA
Hope you find it waiting for you at the upcoming shows.
Paul
Thanks for the tips. I do belong to LCCA; and I will once again put an ad in the Forum.
Jeff, the K-Line full length GN dome car is very nice, but for that price you may want to look for one of the GGD brass cars produced last year. The GGD cars had the correct 6-wheel trucks. The K-Line cars had 4-wheel trucks; some guys replaced them with 6-wheel MTH trucks from the MTH full dome Premier cars.
Oh, did not know.

Hasn't Lionel done a remake of some K Line cars? Maybe the ESE set?.....and they added kinematic couplers that ended up making the the gap wider between cars. ( correct me if I'm wrong)
K Line set the bar extremely high for passenger sets, and its remains high to this day.
Another alternative is to have Christine Braden paint and decorate a suitable donor full dome for you; she already has the necessary arwork (decals) for the project.
You should give Nicholas Smith Trains a call. Telephone: 610.353.8585
Some people think the train shop is upstairs above the toy store. But in the toy store on the first floor is a ton of K-Line items. Engines, Rolling Stock, Passenger Cars, Accessories, etc.
These items don't seem to show up on their website. But I was just there before Christmas and there is no shortage of K-Line items there, I can tell you that.
Good Hunting!
Ron
Thanks for that tip! I will contact them ASAP.
