I have noted the strong advice to use 22uh inductors when using MTH DCS. Is there a mandate use wound over axial color code inductors? Also what amp or wattage recommendations for the different applications of the inductors. I'm new to DCS. Thanks in advance.

I am sure experts will jump in with some specific information, it will help them if you describe in more detail your applications. I read all the threads on the inductors too when planning my first DCS system - OBTW, it is fine with no inductors.
Thank you for the response Hokie71. I am going to use isolated rail modules to control signals, etc.; install led lighting in passenger cars; flashing led's on cabooses and observation cars, etc.
I’ve always used 22Uh 285mA inductors for led lighting applications. Although those values might be subject to change over the years as more experience is gathered.
For LED lighting, a couple of hundred milliamps is more than sufficient. If you want to use the inductor internally for locomotive track connections, I recommend going with one that's rated at 4-5 amps. For track connections, I pick one rated at 10 amps or more.
- Here's a suitable 285ma 22uh Inductor.
- Here's a suitable 6 amp 22uh Inductor.
- Here's a suitable 10 amp 22uh Inductor.
Note that these can frequently be found cheaper on eBay or overseas sources, you just have to wait a few weeks.
Great. Thank You. You Guys are The Best!!!!
My solution was to convert all my MTH to Legacy, no need for chokes. All kidding aside, John's recommendations are the way to go. When I ran DCS, what ever TMCC engine killed the signal I would add a six amp inductor. Funny how some would effect signal others would not.
Thanks Gary. I've placed orders for John's recommendations. I had oringinally planned to run total conventional trains but......

Once you've tasted the lure of command control, it's hard to go back...

Sounds like a plan... please post pictures as you progress. I have a number of the 285ma (extras from GRJ so they are guaranteed to be foolproof) I plan to use on passenger cars when I finally get a roundtuit.

Okay Hokie 71 will do.
