Phase 1:

Complete stripping of everything down to the frame for overhaul, including the tender and trucks in prepping for Kadee install.

The gearbox was opened and all that gunk was cleaned out with toothpicks, Q-tips, and finally brake cleaner.  Then the transmission was shimmed to remove any play, and a new 21st century electronics package was installed:

  • ERR Cruise Commander
  • GRJ's Chuff Generator (totally worth it!)
  • GRJ's Super Chuffer (worth even more!)
  • LED headlight (with Bondic for a cast-in lens)
  • Twin 4 Ohm high-definition speakers (in series)
    • Neodymium 4 Ohm laptop speaker, with enclosure under the ERR board and Super Chuffer boards, aiming down and towards the steam chest, on top of the gear box.
    • Tang Band full range 1" subwoofer and 2"x5" enclosure in tender, facing down through the original grille.
  • TAS Smoke generator, with intake hole opened from 3/8" to 5/8"

Next up...

Installation of the scale pilot truck and modification of the trailing truck, positioning of the tether in the coal stoker pipe location,  Kadee install...

...and some cool stuff that you'll never see coming...

GunRunnerJohn, again... thanks so much for your install help and timely advice! You are one of the best reference sources this hobby has.

Thanks,

- Mario

Mario, what is the first 3 digit number on the left side on your spectrum analyzer scale, x axis? I am guessing 160 if those are octave divisions but can't read for sure.

Pete

They're 20Hz between the vertical lines (major & minor grid lines) from the left margin to 110Hz. Then goes up from there.

The sound is roughly in a bell curve from 110-1000Hz, or the bottom half of vocal range, and the sweet spot of "orchestral range".

Again... not bad for 1996 technology.

Oh, and the volume was not turned all the way up.

Thanks,

Pretty impressive. Anything below 200 hz is good. I will have to check out my dual fatboys with Legacy RS for comparison when I get mine done.

I was having the SAME conversation with Marker last night!

We were comparing and contrasting YouTube videos of locomotives with dual Fat Boys, and we can't. The spectrum analyzer was no use, as the speakers of the phones and the questionable source of the videos (my iPhone is set to 4K, but most videos weren't even HD.

I'd LOVE to see your results with the same app, and then we can even meet up in person at The Club (I have a key) and we can compare.

This is fun!

thanks,

-Mario

What app are you using? I have a 35 year old analog audiophile 10 band spectrum analyzer that has a calibrated mike. I can also take the audio out of that to a USB DAQ and use computer software for finer analysis.

Summer finally arrived so it may be a while before I get to this.

Haven't heard from Marker in a while. Good to hear he is still participating.

I'm using an app called Spectrum Analyzer.

I'm sure it's not calibrated and totally not even close to what you have. I'm jealous.

Heres a screen shot of the app, on my iPhone 7+, and next to the unit:

Meanwhile, I talk to Marker just about everyday. He just took deli every of his Atlas F7s, and we've been discussing that.

Thanks,

-Mario
