Can anyone tell me what rail lines were in use in Pennsylvania during the 1940' & 50's?? I do know about the obvious (reading, PRR, Lehigh Valley etc.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a question I have not really thought about....

I suspect the N&W had to cross PA to get to Buffalo
Erie? I suspect it did.
Yes, CNJ was in Pennsylvania.

That’s what I thought too when I first opened it but there’s also a list of “defunct” railroads further down in that link. They also give the beginning date and end date for most of them. By looking at those dates you can find the ones that operated during the 1940’s and ‘50’s.
I was ready to add a list of defunct Pittsburgh area railroads to the list until I saw that they were listed in that lower list. So that should answer Paul's question if Wikipedia is complete and accurate.
Thanks to Jan for posting.

What about the Erie? I know about the NJ & NY parts.....what about in PA?

Union Rail Road.

Stack beat me to it! But I was going to add the Union Railroad in and around Pittsburgh. My Dad's father worked for the Union. My other grandfather worked for the Pennsy. Don't forget the Bessemer and Lake Erie ran out of Pittsburgh to Lake Erie. The Montour ran just north of my house in the South Hills when I lived there. Great thread!!!!

Stack,
You know ofcourse the old Union RailRoad Yard in Pitcarin, Pa is again the largest
RR yard in the country, more freight moves thru that yard again, than any place in the world. Union RailRoad a class act from the past.

Boy, was that a learning experience! Thanks guys for sharing your wealth of knowledge - I hope MTH & Lionel start using some of the "less popular" road names in their future productions -
Happy Training!
And the Bessemer and Lake Erie!

Yes, Peter, the Erie railroad definitely operated in PA. So did the Delaware and Hudson, which I didn't see mentioned yet.
And the Huntingdon & Broad Top, in Huntingdon, PA.
I also don't recollect anyone mentioning the New York Central.

Tom Shirey,
Not many guys know of the Sole Leather line, (WA&G) better know to us Potter County mountain people, as the Pine Creek RailRoad. My great Grandfather was one of the Engineers, if you want to know more about that RailRoad stop at the Logging Museum on Rt #6, and see the pictures my Grandmother donated.

The DL&W went as far into Pennsylvania as Sunbury.
The NYC had extensive trackage in Pennsylvania.
The B&O came up through Pittsburgh from Cumberland, MD. Amtrak's CAPITOL LIMITED follows that route.
The Strasburg Rail Road
The NYC, Route of the Great Steel Fleet, came down through the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania on the Jersey Shore & Pine Creek and interchanged with the Reading at Newberry Junction southwest of Williamsport.
Another NYC branch served Charleston and Dunbar, West Virginia.
Small mining railroads like the Wanamie were running, too.
The total number of railroads in PA must be at least 300.
An obscure little line called the People's Railway operated between Pottsville and Minersville. An ancient 4-4-0 from that line (No. 3) is displayed in The Train Factory (formerly Railroad Hall) in The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia.
