The list is much longer than you think.

I beleive thats just the current railroads operating

That’s what I thought too when I first opened it but there’s also a list of “defunct” railroads further down in that link.  They also give the beginning date and end date for most of them.  By looking at those dates you can find the ones that operated during the 1940’s and ‘50’s.

I was ready to add a list of defunct Pittsburgh area railroads to the list until I saw that they were listed in that lower list.  So that should answer Paul's question if Wikipedia is complete and accurate.

Thanks to Jan for posting.

Stack beat me to it!  But I was going to add the Union Railroad in and around Pittsburgh.   My Dad's father worked for the Union.  My other grandfather worked for the Pennsy.  Don't forget the Bessemer and Lake Erie ran out of Pittsburgh to Lake Erie.  The Montour ran just north of my house in the South Hills when I lived there. Great thread!!!!

Since the time period mentioned in the original post was the 1940's and '50's, the N&W was not operating in PA at that time.  The NKP operated through the northwest corner of PA, however.  N&W finally made it to PA when they absorbed both the P&WV (mentioned above in an earlier post) and the NKP in 1963.

I also don't recollect anyone mentioning the New York Central.

Curt

The B&O came up through Pittsburgh from Cumberland, MD. Amtrak's CAPITOL LIMITED follows that route.

The Strasburg Rail Road

The NYC, Route of the Great Steel Fleet, came down through the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania on the Jersey Shore & Pine Creek and interchanged with the Reading at Newberry Junction southwest of Williamsport.

Another NYC branch served Charleston and Dunbar, West Virginia.

Small mining railroads like the Wanamie were running, too.

The total number of railroads in PA must be at least 300.
