Here's something you don't see too often. Two steam locomotives at the same place, one week apart. On June 28, 2015, Southern 4501 departs Walton, VA after turning on the wye on her way back to Radford and Bristol. One week later, on July 4, 2015, Norfolk & Western 611 arrives in Walton from Roanoke to turn on the wye for her return trip. Both photos were shot from roughly the same vantage point.
Walton is a bit of a drive from Radford, and most people gathered closer to town near the Plum Creek signals during the turning procedure. After dealing with the masses at Plum Creek on the first trip, I tried for something different on the 2nd Radford turn. The small crowd that made the trek to Walton congregated near the crossing, making it relatively easy for a generally people-free view. It was a different story one week later as Walton is considerably easier to get to from the Roanoke side, and there was a decent sized crowd waiting for the 611.
