I have just purchased a complete 465 dispatch station with mic. I installed the 4 D cell batteries as directed, having tested the batteries prior to installation. When I press the button on the mic handle and tap the mic I can hear the tapping thru the speaker. When I talk in to it, I can't hear anything. Has anyone encountered this? Has anyone ever taken this hand held mic apart? I've Google searched for a diagram of the microphone. No luck. I found some helpful info when I searched CB radio repair. The salt crystals in microphones tend to solidify over the decades. I'd like to see what I'm getting into before I open it up and perhaps break something. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks. Len

Lionel likely sourced the microphone as a standard telephone carbon microphone. Back in the day in telephone service, these microphones were serviced regularly where the carbon granules were repacked and diaphragms replaced as needed. You can open it up and see if you can repack the granules - at this point, it doesn't work, so you won't make it much worse.
Basic diagram and explanation:
There are circuits around that will take a modern microphone and adapt it for use in a carbon microphone system such as this that you may be able to whip up:
Hope this helps set you in a direction!

@Rev Len It's quite a bit later - almost 11 months. How about an update, please?
Thanks for your message. Sadly, this project has been placed on the back burner. Limited progress to report. I did open the microphone; there was not much inside. It looked like someone had tried to repair it ahead of me. Hate that when it happens! Perhaps someone on the Forum has had a better experience with one of these. Thanks again. Len
Google carbon microphones. Lots of information on why they were used and situations where they are still in use. You might find a working one from and old analog (rotary) phone for a couple of bucks at the thrift/antique shop. Ebay has some NOS ones but prices tend to be a bit high. Unless you're a stickler for originality using the above circuit probably would be the best way to get your Dispatch Station working.
