With Atlas releasing a second run of 53' well cars and containers, it has me thinking about spine cars. MTH and K-Line (now both gone ) have both done 48's, but those cars have been gone for a long time now, as have 48' trailers. With how much excitement there seemed to be at 53' intermodal equipment finally arriving to O scale, I would have to imagine I'm not the only who'd be eager to see these.
Might be worth also tossing out there that Bowser still has tooling for 53' trailers from their RoadRailers.
Steven,
I think you have a good suggestion and I support it. Prototype 53' spines come in both three and five car configurations. I've wondered whatever became of the 53 foot trailer tooling after Weaver closed. While I don't feast on manufacturing inside baseball like some people do I dimly remember Bowser sold the tools to Weaver, which offered both Roadrailers and a nice stand-alone 53 foot trailer. When Weaver closed there was public discussion of where some tooling went but I don't remember ever seeing anything about the trailers. Yes, they'd be a good starting point for a trailer load.
By the way, some pictures of those Bowser/Weaver trailers: This trailer started life as a Roadrailer, but I removed the bogey to convert it to TOFC use:
Weaver offered this highway trailer unlettered:
