In 2013,  I added the Lionel Burning Hobo Depot to my layout.  I was never impressed with the amount of smoke that it produced in comparison to the amount of flames from the flickering lights.  I just completed installing a MTH PS-1 smoke unit into the depot replacing the original unit.  On my first test run of the revised setup, the amount of smoke produced sent my wife running back up the basement stairs.  She mentioned that she could barely see me at the table though the smoke.  Now it looks like a building really on fire.  A little experiment with the depot resulted in my running the smoke unit only a short time, shutting it off, and leaving the flickering lights on.  I still have more smoke coming out for quite some time than I had with the original setup.  Of course, I now have a fan driven unit compared with a convection unit, so I can’t really fault the original design.
