I have read in the past that people have sent their bases in to Lionel to have that overheating charger problem fixed. I was wondering what the cost of this service is and if it actually does eliminate the heat. As it is I never could put my remote on the base; even with the terminals taped over it still warms up the remote. Any info is much appreciated.

I just got mine back. No charge and while mine never got too hot. It is cool now and works great.
The heat is from the Legacy components. Even after my 990 charger was fixed the CAB2 when placed in in the 990 base gets substantially hotter than the same CAB2 placed in a non-returned first generation 993 base.
I have both the #990 and the #993, both have been to Lionel for the upgraded charging circuit. Both will now charge properly, but the CAB2 gets too hot in the #990 for me to feel good about it, so I charge both remotes in the #993, never a problem there and when I come back they're cool and comfy.
Thanks for the input guys. Although I'm surprised to hear the mixed reviews for the heat after the upgrade. So far one poster has a cool remote and two still have warm remotes. Strange.
Either way I think I'll still call Lionel on Monday and arrange for the fix. If anything I just want to say it's been done, and I suppose I could also have them include the black modules for the 1.52 update while it's there.
