There’s been a good bit of discussion regarding UK railways on the forum in recent months. The topic of British books has come up on several occasions so, since it appears there’s some demand for British material among the OGR posters, I thought I’d share my preferred source for UK titles which a friend who’s also a British fan alerted me to.

The Book Depository is a UK based distributor stocking an extensive selection of British titles at discounted pricing. The website offers the opportunity to conduct transactions in US dollars and all parcels are sent via air mail without an additional shipping charge. The price you see is the price you pay. The post free feature is great because shipping heavy items such as books can be very costly and can almost double the purchase price in certain cases. The Book Depository’s service is extremely fast and I frequently receive orders within a week of placement. The only recommendation I have regarding timing of orders is to avoid the two month period between the middle of November and January as holiday volume really gums up the works.

Here’s the link to the railway section of the website:

Hi Bill,

When you visit England, may I recommend that you pay a visit to the bookstore at any of the larger railway stations. They normally carry a very good range of railway related books and magazines.

Bill,

Piggybacking on Nicole's suggestion, Ian Allan, a publisher of an extensive range of British railway books, operates a number of its own stores. My friend who recently returned from a trip to the UK visited one of them. He told me he was so impressed they just about had to physically extricate him to finally get him out of there.

Here's the link to Ian Allan's website. The locations of the stores are near the bottom of the page.

Another of my train freinds travels to the UK on a periodic basis. It seems as if he never returns with less than 40 pounds of new books!
