Am I imagining this? Did (or does) one of the purveyors of building fronts offer backgrounds, that, when aligned with their fronts, match up to give a 3D effect of depth and elongation of the building front?

I won’t pretend to be the end all be all source but I’ve never seen or heard of that. There’s a lot of flats that come with short sidewalls so that they’re not just front walls, but I can’t say I’ve ever seen one that has a backdrop to make the effect.

Ameritown had an insert to show an "interior" for thier front flats. The inserts were of separate sale than the front flats.
Not sure where I saw it, but I believe there was a gentleman, perhaps a professional photographer, who was able to shoot actual outside scenes and print the photos in large format and assemble and mount them on his layout as a background in a manner so as to give a three-dimensional aspect to the building fronts and layout.
Shooting the scenes from outside to get a 3D non-perspective view would require a Paralex camera raised to the height of each window. If you shoot from below, the print would be very distorted without that type of camera.
Parallax is a displacement or difference in the apparent position of an object viewed along two different lines of sight.
That's a tricky thing to do even for a professional photographer. If you had a drone with a camera, I guess it could be done.

Makes some nice ones. Pricey but they look good. I used the foam flats and attached them to wood and painted the tops and sides black. Good from far but far from good.

Sorry Rich, I also have those one end of my layout. They look better than my foam flats, especially weathered.
