Howdy, y'all.

I've had an idea for a larger layout that is somewhat Dukes of Hazzard inspired. What I want do is have some sort of (dirt road) incline run alongside one of the straightaways, then once it reaches the appropriate height (taller than an "O" scale auto rack), have an open space over the track (like a bridge being out), then have a freeway on-ramp style decline, which then merges onto a highway (one lane would exit off to become the layout town's main drag, but I'll get to that later).

At the apex of the initial incline, I want a "spring-loaded" or weight-bearing mechanism, that when the appropriate weight comes to rest on the panel, it would "launch" the car over the open space onto the elevated highway on the other side. Although most of the layout's cars would be 1:43 die-cast, I want it to be strong enough to make a 1:36 car "jump", but sensative enough to trigger for something smaller (a Hot Wheel, or a small Transformer).

Has anyone else attempted something like this? If so, do you have pictures, ideas on how to make such a feat work?

This would be a fun project.  I have not done anything exactly like it.  If it were me, i would make the mechanism electric.  I would use a solenoid to "launch" the cars: you can buy or build one with quite a kick to it if you want, and an advantage is that you can adjust the "kick" very precisely just by varying the voltage.  Then, a magnetic reed switch under/in the road surface would detect the car at the right point and trigger the solenoid.  You would have to put a small neodium magnet on the bottom of the car (diecast metal car bodies -- at least the ones I have do not attract magnets ) to activate the reed switch, but they are available very small - the thickness of but only half the idameter of a dime, for example.  This would work and be quite fun.
