I know this has been discussed several times in the past but I have yet to find a good suggestion that doesn't affect the speed of the train. I am using a PC PSU for DC voltages around my layout already so I'm wondering if there's a way to add the diodes for each button and induce a boost voltage from either the PC PSU or another supply of some sort. Has anyone done this successfully? I really want to add the Whistle and Bell buttons, as I'm running conventionally and I'd like to be able to use the button combinations to activate crew sounds and such for my MTH PS3.0 Steamer. Some pictures, schematic or drawings would be amazing.

Thanks,

Todd

I suspect one could be created using a similar techniques as the #167C Whistle Controller.

They added a choke in the circuit that was switched out when you switched in the diode to activate the whistle.  This has the effect of keeping the track voltage more constant to minimize the speed jump or decrease when the whistle was blown.

I'm using a KW transformer right now. My layout is only a 9x5 with an upper lever (separate track). The lever for the whistle won't work well trying to make the button combinations required to make Crew sounds or other functions. Jon any idea the size of coil might be needed? And is the diode just reversed the opposite direction to make the bells? That diagram is a bit confusing to follow as well, I prefer to see buttons or switches represented post 1900 😜😛.

Hi @gunrunnerjohn, I'm only running more modern trains if that makes any difference when choosing button/circuit options for Bell and Whistle activation. What about this Zener diode discussion talked about here:

I'm in the process of making my own little control panel and would like to add these controls to it and perhaps even the direction buttons too. Anyone that could provide a schematic, would be a friend for life!! 🙏🙏
