Is it possible to connect a ps3 smoke unit to a newer MTH RK PS3 diesel if it didn't come with one ?
Been looking at a some recent E-3 and E-8 and they don't seem to have a smoke unit.

The smoke capability is on the board, and I'm pretty sure all the FLASH/Sound files support smoke. So, it's possible, however you'll have to fit the smoke unit in mechanically, and you'll need to deal with the tiny 1mm spacing connectors to get the smoke unit working.
Note that the standard sound/FLASH files support the full sized dual-resistor smoke unit, if you have to use the small single-resistor smoke unit, you'd need a different file, the availability of that capability is somewhat in question.
Thanks GRJ ! I understand the physical aspects of installing the unit. FWIW, I was looking into acquiring a PS3 version smoke unit.
Can you explain the "tiny 1mm spacing connectors to get the smoke unit working" comment, I'm not sure on this.
The standard dual-resistor smoke units for O-gauge diesel and steam are the same with the exception that the "diesel" units have long mounting posts. Some diesels use the smoke unit with short posts as well. These are the smoke units that have been used since 2000 for PS/2 and PS/3.
The PS/3 diesel board has one 8-pin connector for track power and motors, and one 30 pin connector for everything else. The 30 pin connector is a VERY fine pitch 1mm spacing connector, and crimping the pins is a major PITA. Having done a number of diesel upgrades, I have accumulated a bunch of pre-crimped wires that I use for stuff like this, I had very poor luck crimping the tiny pins for this connector.
Holy CR*P, GRJ !!! I thought it'd be easy to just plug in the PS2/3 smoke unit.
Thanks - I think ????
Well, it is if they have the smoke connections. However, I suspect that you'll find they didn't include those wires since the product didn't have smoke.
I guess if I get a newer PS3, then I'll need to check first before getting a smoke unit.
But it *may* be possible.
Well, it "is" possible, but you want to be aware of the issues you may face.
