Any suggestions for adding wooden ties to regular 3 rail track? I'd love to buy the already made, such as the Atlas, but I already have all of the track I need for the new layout and want to keep costs down.

 

I'm an older newbie, just getting back into this. I have a 24 yr old that we had a basic layout for 18 years ago. I now have a 2 yr old that loves trains and I am building an L shaped layout with 2 4x8 tables and an add-on 2'-6" x 8' for a train yard.

If you don't want to buy them, you can generate a whole bunch of them if you have a table saw.  To match the width of the O-gauge track, get some 1/2" or 5/8" clear pine boards.  Rip them down to the right width, the height of the ties.  Then you just take a bunch and cross-cut them to length.  When you get the whole batch of them, dump them into a heavy plastic bag, add a quart of dark stain and massage them until it's evenly distributed.  Remove and dry, and you have a lifetime supply of real wooden ties for your tubular track.  You can also seal them if you like with a matte finish Urethane sealer.
