Benchwork is done. Next is the plywood top and maybe homasote. Would it be feasible to just lay the homasote on top of the plywood without any adhesive? Would double back tape keep it steadfast? It seems pretty heavy so it will stay put without the adhesive. I prefer to do that because if I need to disassemble it, a dusty mess can be avoided. And if I do use it I would cut it outside. I say "maybe" because if I can find Celotex soundstop, or Quietbrace in my area (Pennsylvania-New Jersey border) in New Hope, PA I would purchase one of them.Looking forward to your responses. Thanks, Fred

I used liquid nails to hold down my Homasote. Not too much but enough i thought. When I disassembled it it came right off the plywood with minimal effort. Just a scrapper at the glued points and it separated with no mess.
I have one of the house brands of sound board from my local Home Depot as you can't get Homasote, and I used Liquid Nails to glue it down. And I made sure the sound board seams lined up on the plywood seems. I would glue it down is what I guess I'm saying.
I used drywall screws. Effective, fast and easily removed.

Yep. We also use them....
I used drywall screws on my layout also.

The drywall screws don't transmit the sound to the plywood? I guess it is okay if the fastrack is not screwed to the homasote. I would only screw the track where it might be necessary.
absolutly no glue......a few nails hold it in place,i mean wheres it going to go?-Jim
Screws here. The Homasote isolates these screws from the track and its screws. The track screws do not go through the Homasote.

Fred,
We do not use Homasote, we use noise suppression acoustical tile blocks, that slip fit together, and we screw them down for easy removal. No glue at all. We then staple down a thin Green indoor/outdoor rug with minimal staples, over the screwed down acoustical block tile, then we screw down the FasTrack, to make the layout seriously silent. Last Christmas my wife actually ask me to remove some of the acoustical tile on the platform this Christmas, so she could hear the trains running in the formal living room.

I used drywall screws as well.

No adhesive for me, just drywall screws. Where on the PA NJ border are you? I bought my Homasote at Home Depot in northern Delaware. --JCD
when you use Homasote or a similar product do you cut it to size for the track work or lay full size sheets over the plywood
and if you cut to size, how best to accommodate curves, etc
One advantage to screwing the homesote to the plywood. If you are into buildings or small scenes created at the workbench. They can be built on a plywood base. You can easily remove the homesote where the building or scene will reside with a utility knife and drop the plywood base in it's place.
jpc - My layout is a table type display layout with fastrack so I have Homasote down in sheets. The track lays on top and it has made a tremendous difference in the sound. I am in the process of foaming the hollow back cavity of the track as suggested by others here on the forum. I have found the foam reduces the noise as well. --JCD
Fred,
As you mentioned, Homasote is pretty heavy. You will find because of this, it will pretty much "lay down" flat by itself and not want to move easily. You might find that there will be some lifting or curling at the edges. I would use a short sheetrock screw to pull the homasote back down in those areas only. I would not be concerned about transmitting sound thru the screws since they are surrounded by the homasote. You will find that the comatose will hold a screw fairly well so you can fasten you Fastback where needed. I would use a screw for this that does not penetrate the plywood.
