I recently picked up a set of these double headed steamers. They are preway Flyer O gauge, and the lead engine is powered, the trailer is unpowered. I thought this was interesting, especially in a prewar item. I have a very limited knowledge of Flyer, especially prewar O gauge.

Can anyone let me knwo about these engines, such information as they years produced, etc. Also, the pony truck one unit is damaged. Is there a good source for parts to repair/replace this truck?

Thanks in advance everyone.

I believe the double headed set was made in '39 only. The tender of the 420 locomotive and the pilot of the trailing locomotive (a sheet metal 2-4-0 loco) has the sheet metal knuckle coupler. The tender on the 2-4-0 had the new for 1939 drop link and pin coupler. The trailing locomotive had no motor, but did have a pick-up collector for the operating headlight. Only cataloged double steam locomotive set ever packaged. Which engine needs the replacement truck?
Seafoid,

The double header set appeared in the 1939 catalog.

It also headlined on the cover of the catalog, with a few extra cars.

I believe that the powered 420 is actually a 2-4-2.

And the Type XX dummy is a 2-4-4.

The dummy engine has one of the sheet metal knuckle couplers that couples with the coupler on the tender of the powered 420.

They are a fun pair of engines to watch.

Thanks for the responses. I loved the pictures. I am awaiting the engines from the auction house, so I am looking at the photos which were posted. Looking a little closer, I think now that the bad truck wheels are on the two wheeled trailing truck on the powered unit. I will know more once I receive the units, and will let you know for sure which truck is bad.

I thought that this double header was interesting, so I threw out a bid just kind of bidding blindly, but what i thought it was worth to me. I was actually a bit surprised to get it.

Well, I received the set, and it is in pretty good cosmetic shape. The lead truck on the 420XX dummy unit has a damaged wheel. One wheelset and axle is missing from the 2 axle trailing truck. Any suggerstions where the replacement wheelsets and axles, or replacement trucks can be obtained?

Thanks for the help everyone.
