Opened a brand new AF by Lionel #752 Seaboard Coaler this afternoon to install on the layout. Got everything hooked up and ready to go but the clamshell while it opens and closes will not move up or down. I can hear the small can motor running, but the gearbox is not turning the spool which winds the cable up or down. Has anybody on the Forum had such an experience? I called Lionel and they have no parts or ideas. Thanks for your input.

A lot of times the grease they used in those gear boxes turn semi-solid and since that product hasn't been manufactured in a few years it may need to be opened up and cleaned out and re-greased if damage isn't done.
I have a Lionel Log Conveyor of the newer variety that this happened on, and Lionel has no parts. Had to pick up a older version that still used a AC motor and is noisy but it works.
Take a look inside the gear box and see what you see.

Turbgine,
Please give these two Auth. Service Stations a call. Hopefully, one of them can repair your coal loader.

Did you ever get the coal loader to function? I just took two out of boxes today and they would not operate. After completely dismantling the drive units I discovered that the 50 cent o-rings used to connect the motor to the gear drives were too flimsy. After a trip to Ace for new 0-rings I will spend all week-end reassembling the units.

I ended up sending the Seaboard Coaler to S&W Train Parts in PA to be repaired. It was the cheap O ring drive that Lionel used that rotted away over time. I try to run the unit every week or so just to keep the belt from deteriorating. How hard was it to get to the drive pulley and o rings? Did you have to remove the house which covers the motor housing? If you could post a picture or two that would be great. Or, email them to me at milt@paiger.org. Thanks for your followup.
I had the same thing with my magnet crane. It takes patience, but it is not hard to do. What specific O rings did you find at Ace Hardware? I paid $5 each for my "special ones" from a train parts seller.
