A few years ago I picked up this 1/48 scale mustang at Ollies for about $5. It sat in my cabinet for a few years until I could figure out something to do with it.

I took the airplane apart, and drilled out the prop. I cut a wire from a metal clothes hanger, and made a shaft. The shaft was fitted into the prop & inserted into the plane. I cut a small area out from below the plane, and threaded a rubber band around the shaft.

I built a base out of a plastic political sign, and mounted a motor under the base. I made a large pulley out of plastic, fitted the rubber band around it, there we have it...

Looking at the base, I needed something, and it came in the form of a piece of aluminum chimney flashing, which made a pretty convincing hanger. I took some 5050 LEDs out of my junk drawer & put some lights up.

The lights will always be on, but the prop animation will be wired to a push button for the kids to activate on our community christmas display.

I have a personal friend who is a retired Lt Co in the Air Force, so it only made sense to letter the hanger up with his name.

Total project cost- <$10

I tried to embed the video so folks didn't have to go to youtube, without luck...

Thanks for sharing your project.  You did a REALLY AWESOME JOB !!!  And for just a few bucks!!!!

I have a bunch of little nephews and nieces that would love to push a button and make the propellers turn like that!!!!   I want to do one just like in at the airport on my train layout.   I'm guessing you used a 12 volt DC motor. The RPMs that the prop is turning look perfect!!!! Do you know about what RPM it's turning at?

Once I have the props spinning, I'm thinking about making a couple of my planes fly around over my layout.  When I figure out how to do that, I'll share that with everyone!!!

Take Care,

JOHN
